Current Transformers Range

Description

Low voltage current transformers (CTs) are electrical devices that convert high current levels into lower, more manageable levels for measurement or protection purposes. These devices are commonly used in electrical power systems to measure the current flowing through a circuit or to provide a signal to instrumentation or to protective relays that monitor for faults.

Application

Low voltage CTs typically have a an output of 1A or 5A or 0.333mV.  They are designed to operate at a frequency of 50 or 60 Hz, or 400Hz if requested and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes to accommodate different installation requirements. Some common applications for low voltage CTs include power quality monitoring, metering, and fault detection.

Guide to our Current Transformers Range

Welcome to our comprehensive guide on current transformers (CTs) and their various applications. Current transformers are vital components in electrical systems, designed to measure and monitor electrical currents. They play a crucial role in protecting equipment, ensuring safety, and enabling efficient energy management. In this article, we will discuss different types of current transformers and their specific applications.

Tape Wrapped Current Transformers

Tape Wrapped Current Transformers are a commonly used type of CTs. They consist of a copper wire wound a silicon core which provides a secondary output. The primary conductor passes through the hole of the CT carrying the current load to be measured, while the secondary winding provides a proportional current for measurement or protection devices. Tape wrapped CT’s can be manufactured to customer size, as no tooling is required to make the product. Tape wrapped CTs are typically used for various industrial applications, such as power monitoring, energy management, and electrical equipment protection. Available in metering, protection and Class PX.

Moulded Case Current

Moulded Case Current Transformers are designed with a protective housing, which provides insulation and safeguards against external environmental factors. They are compact and provide excellent mechanical protection. These CTs are commonly used in switchgear, motor control centres, and panel boards. Moulded Case CTs offer accurate current measurement in demanding applications. Available in metering only, not available in protection or Class PX.

Resin Cast Current Transformers

Resin Cast Current Transformers are constructed by encapsulating the secondary windings in epoxy resin. This casting process provides excellent insulation, making them suitable for outdoor installations. Resin Cast CTs are resistant to moisture, chemicals, and temperature fluctuations, making them ideal for use in distribution transformers, and outdoor substations. Available in metering, protection and Class PX.

Three Phase Current Transformers

Three Phase Current Transformers are designed to measure currents in three-phase power systems. They consist of three separate cores wound and cased together to give one single product. These CTs are widely used in industrial and commercial settings to measure and monitor the balanced and unbalanced currents in three-phase circuits, as well as energy monitoring, available in metering class only.

Split-Core Current Transformers

Split-Core Current Transformers are designed for easy installation without disconnecting the primary conductor. They can be opened and clamped around the conductor, making them convenient for retrofit applications. Split-Core CTs are commonly used in energy management systems, power quality monitoring, and equipment troubleshooting. Available in metering class only.

Moulded Case Rectangular Current Transformers

Moulded Case Rectangular Current Transformers have a rectangular shape and are used in applications where space is limited. They provide accurate current measurement and can be mounted directly on busbars, circuit breakers, or other compact equipment. These CTs find applications in switchgear, distribution panels, and compact substations. Available in metering class only

Core Balance Current Transformers

Core Balance Current Transformers, also known as Zero-Sequence Current Transformers, are specifically designed to detect Earth leakage in electrical systems. They measure the residual current flowing in a circuit and provide a signal for earth leakage detection and protection devices. Core Balance CTs are commonly used in sensitive equipment and systems where Earth leakage protection is crucial, such as in data centres standby power supply and critical infrastructure.

Summation Current Transformers

Summation Current Transformers are used to measure the total current flowing through multiple conductors or cables. They have multiple primary windings and a single secondary winding. These CTs are commonly used in situations where it is necessary to measure the combined current of several conductors, such as in power distribution networks or monitoring multiple electrical circuits.

Rogowski Coil Transducer

Rogowski Coil Transducers are flexible current sensors that do not have an iron core. They are made of a coiled conductor and provide a voltage output proportional (non linear) to the rate of change of the current being measured. Rogowski Coils offer advantages such as easy installation, light, flexible and available in many sizes. They are commonly used in power quality monitoring, energy audits, and load profiling applications. Available in metering class only

Conclusion

Current transformers are essential components in electrical systems, providing accurate current measurement, protection, and control. The various types of CTs, including Taped Type, Moulded Case, Resin Cast, Three Phase, Split-Core, Moulded Case Rectangular, Core Balance, Summation, and Rogowski Coil Transducers, cater to different applications and installation requirements. Understanding these types and their applications can help you choose the right current transformers for your specific needs.
